In regards to nonfiction text, it is becoming ever more important for students to be introduced to it at an earlier age. Seeing as a majority of the text we read in our adult lives is nonfiction (for school, the workplace, and pleasure), students must learn as soon as possible how to read nonfiction. The purpose of this paper is to discuss nonfiction and informational trade books and to evaluate their use in the primary school classrooms, in grades kindergarten through grade two. Once this has been established, we will discuss how nonfiction can align to the Connecticut Common Core State Standards, and we will give examples of activities to use in K-2 classrooms that utilize nonfiction and informational resources.
